Slow Tourism and Sustainable Mobility. Can I visit Lake Como without a car?

Lake Como is not just a destination; it is a state of mind.

Nestled like a diamond among the Lombard Prealps, this inverted “Y” shaped lake has enchanted poets, travelers, and dreamers for centuries. Its beauty lies in the contrast between the deep blue of the Lario and the lush green of the botanical gardens adorning historic estates like Villa Carlotta or Villa del Balbianello, but also all the surrounding ever-green mountains.

Every village, from Bellagio to Varenna, and through our own charming Menaggio, tells a story of timeless elegance.

Here, nature and architecture engage in perfect harmony, offering views that look hand-painted.

Slow tourism finds its natural habitat along these shores: it is an invitation to stop, breathe in the crisp morning air, and let yourself be cradled by the sound of waves lapping against the stone piers.

A big dilemma of many tourists, by the way, is: how and can I visit Lake Como without a car? Is it truly possible to give up four wheels in such a morpho

Visiting Lake Como without a car.

In the collective imagination, exploring Lake Como is often associated with long queues on the Regina state road or the exhausting search for parking among the narrow streets of the lakeside villages.

The answer is not only positive but opens the door to a radically different travel experience—one that is more authentic and free from the stress of traffic.

Leaving the car behind means reclaiming your time and observing the landscape from a privileged perspective, without the anxiety of watching the road or the GPS.

So, your dilemma is quickly solved…Yes, it is possible to visit the Lake and its elegant villages without a car, you need just to plan your visit before.

Getting to Lake Como by train or by plane.

If you are arriving from the South, the first stop is, with no doubt, Milan. From Milan, where you arrived by train or by plane, you can board a direct train from Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi, and in less than an hour, you will reach the shores of the Lario, landing directly in the heart of the city of Como or continuing toward the eastern branch.

A fundamental hub for those traveling from the south is also Lecco. This city, immortalized by Manzoni, is perfectly connected to Milan by a frequent railway line (about 40 minutes of travel).

Once you arrive, the Lecco station is just a few steps from the pier, where you can take a boat to explore the eastern shore, reaching gems like Varenna and Mandello del Lario in a sustainable way.

If, instead, you are arriving from the North, the journey becomes an experience of pure contemplation.

You can reach the lake through the majestic Alpine passes or, even better, by using the Bernina Express, the red train that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. From Tirano, you can easily take a local train that runs along the Valtellina and stops at the main stations on the upper Lake (such as Colico and Varenna), allowing you to descend toward Menaggio and other nice villages without ever needing a car.

Ferries, Trains, and Interconnected Villages around Lake Como

When searching online for the best options to visit the lake without a car, it clearly emerges that the lake transport network is the true heart of sustainable mobility.

The Navigazione Laghi offers a fleet of ferries, hydrofoils, and boats that connect the most iconic points of the Lario: Menaggio, Cadenabbia, Bellagio, and Varenna form the so-called “Central Lake” district, a perfectly interconnected hub where you can move from one shore to another in just a few minutes of navigation.

Varenna, in particular, is a vital nerve center thanks to its train station on the Milan-Tirano line, allowing travelers to arrive directly from the Lombard capital in about an hour.

Once you disembark in Varenna, the ferry becomes your “magic carpet,” transforming the transit itself into a moment of panoramic contemplation.

Additionally, the local bus network (ASF Autolinee) extensively covers the coast, allowing visitors to reach smaller hamlets and scenic trails with ease.

By the way we do not recommend using your car to go from a village to another one, even when embarking is possible, because you will loose all the magic of visiting these places by feet.

Other ways to discover the Lake with no car.

Developing a more sustainable mobility model means looking beyond traditional public transport and embracing physical movement.

Slow tourism on Lake Como is best expressed through trekking and cycle tourism.

  • The Lake Como Greenway: A gentle 10 km path winding between Colonno and Griante, perfect for those who wish to walk while admiring villas and gardens at an unhurried pace.
  • The Way of the Wanderer (Sentiero del Viandante): For more experienced hikers, this ancient commercial route on the Lecco shore offers unforgettable stages among castles and olive groves.
  • E-bikes and Cycling: Thanks to pedal-assisted bikes, even the climbs leading to the mountains above Menaggio become accessible to everyone. Moving by bike allows you to discover hidden corners that would remain invisible from a car window, following the rhythm of your own heart and lungs.
