We have already talked about this magical place in our previous article regarding the scenery walk bringing to Sacro Monte di Ossuccio, that you can find here.

But today, we are going to delve into its history and culture.

Sacro Monte di Ossuccio is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003, this “Sacred Mountain” is a hidden gem that invites travelers to step away from the bustling lakeside and into a centuries-old tradition of devotion and artistry.

Let’s discover more!

A Legacy of Faith and Artistry

The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio is one of the nine pre-Alpine “Sacri Monti” of Piedmont and Lombardy, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It features 14 chapels that narrate the life of Mary, from her Annunciation to her Assumption into heaven. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the religious complex is dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary.

As you begin the ascent along the cobblestone path, you will encounter fourteen Baroque-style chapels that lead the way toward the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso.

Each chapel is a masterpiece, housing intricate stucco statues and vibrant frescoes that vividly recreate sacred scenes. The site is a testament to the popular devotion of the era, offering a “miniature” pilgrimage for those unable to make the arduous journey to the Holy Land.

Curious Tales and Hidden Wonders

Beyond its architectural beauty, the site is steeped in local legend. It is said that the sanctuary’s origin is tied to a miracle involving a mute shepherdess who regained her speech after discovering a statue of the Virgin Mary in a nearby cave.

Despite repeated attempts to move the statue to the local collegiate church, it mysteriously kept returning to the mountainside, signaling that this was the chosen site for the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso.

Today, the walk up the Viale del Santuario offers more than just spiritual reflection; it provides one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Como, including a unique vantage point over the famous Isola Comacina.

Visiting the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio: enjoy the natural beauty also with children

The journey to the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio is a wonderful way to experience the spiritual and natural beauty of Lake Como. The classic route starts near the cemetery of Sala Comacina, leading you towards the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso. As you leave behind the lively lakeside promenade, you will find yourself immersed in a relaxing, panoramic mountain walk that offers a true escape from the bustle of the towns.

The trail winds its way uphill for about 1.5 km until you reach a junction. From here, those seeking a more adventurous trek can continue climbing toward the ‘Alpe di Sala,’ where a breathtaking vantage point and a characteristic farmhouse await. It is the perfect reward, where you can taste local goat cheese, cured meats, and enjoy a glass of Merlot while soaking in the view.

However, for a more gentle experience—especially if you are traveling with children—we suggest following the path that passes through a cluster of charming, renovated farmhouses.

This section of the route is more level and pleasant, making it an excellent choice for families.

Please note that while the trail is a beautiful outdoor experience, it is not stroller-friendly due to the uneven, cobbled, and gravel terrain typical of these ancient paths; we recommend a baby carrier for the little ones.

Once you reach the area of the farmhouses, you can take a well-deserved rest while admiring the magnificent, unique view of Isola Comacina.

There is a designated picnic area near the Sanctuary where you can relax, though please remember that consuming food or drinks directly along the monumental chapel path is discouraged out of respect for the site.

If you are a cheese lover, we highly recommend a stop at the local producers in the area to taste and buy excellent cow cheese and other authentic mountain products. Finally, once you reach the top, you will find a restaurant and a public fountain near the Sanctuary to quench your thirst and enjoy a meal before starting your descent.

A Place of Living Tradition and Festivities

The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio is also a vibrant center of local faith and tradition.

The most significant event is the Natività di Maria (Nativity of Mary) on September 8th, the Sanctuary’s patronal festival. On this day, the path is filled with a profound atmosphere of devotion as the local community gathers for a series of religious services.

Additionally, every third Saturday of the month, the Sanctuary hosts a traditional pilgrimage starting at dawn, where participants climb the chapel path reciting the Rosary, offering a truly authentic glimpse into the spiritual life of Lake Como.

If you are visiting in late June, you might also be lucky enough to witness the spectacular Sagra di San Giovanni in the nearby village of Ossuccio, famous for its boat procession and fireworks over Isola Comacina—a perfect cultural counterpart to the serene beauty of the Sacro Monte.
